The Alexander Technique will help you to correct your postural habits and improve overall functioning and wellbeing.

What is The Alexander Technique?

Letting go of tension

The Alexander Technique is a way of learning to let go of the excessive tension in the body which interferes with our natural postural reflexes.

If our muscles are habitually over-tightened our body becomes distorted, unbalanced and compressed.

Misusing our body in this way can have far reaching effects on our health and can result in various forms of discomfort and pain.

Body awareness

Through The Alexander Technique we learn to be more aware of the way we use our body so that we can improve our posture, alignment and balance.

We can then carry out our daily activities with the greatest poise, the minimum of strain and feel taller and lighter in the body.

Who can benefit?

The Alexander Technique has been found particularly helpful in the following areas:

  • Back, neck and joint pain
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Breathing and vocal problems
  • Stroke rehabilitation
  • Recovery from spinal injury and whiplash
  • Performing Arts - dance, drama, music
  • Singing and voice work
  • Sport - co-ordination and balance
  • Pregnancy and preparation for childbirth
  • Making the best of chronic pain or disability

While many people come to the Alexander Technique with specific medical conditions or performance related problems, an increasing number use the Alexander Technique purely because it helps them to become calmer and more responsive in their daily lives.

The Alexander lessons

The Alexander Technique is taught one-to-one in a series on lessons lasting about 45 minutes each.

  • Recent research published in the British Medical Journal shows that six lessons followed by prescribed exercise is one of the most efficient ways to treat chronic non-specific low back pain.
  • Most pupils find that for sustained improvement a course of 20 to 30 lessons is most effective but this can be discussed with the teacher as we each have varying needs and goals.

In a lesson the teacher uses a subtle and unique form of manipulation combined with verbal instructions.

  • Using simple activities of sitting, standing and lying down the teacher guides the student into a more integrated co-ordination of the head, neck, back and arms.
  • As the student learns to allow natural poise and balance to re-emerge he or she will usually notice the change as one of lightness and greater freedom of movement.
  • During the lesson one should wear ordinary loose-fitting clothes which do not restrict movement.
